Call for Blood Donors in June: Patients Don't Take a Summer Vacation from Needing Blood

For a limited-time, Vitalant is thanking donors with a $10 gift card and a chance to win $10,000

So-called “Trauma Season”,  spanning Memorial Day to Labor Day, coincides with summer activities that often lead to fewer blood donations. Despite this seasonal dip, patient blood needs persist daily. Donating with nonprofit Vitalant during June is vital to avoiding a summer blood shortage.

Dan-Richmond-family.jpgA head-on car crash left Dan Richmond critically injured just weeks before his first child was born. He needed more than 100 units of blood which helped make his survival possible, as well as the ability to experience many milestones in the years since with his growing family.

“There are no words to describe, to say thank you enough to the  individuals who donated blood that gave me the opportunity to be here, to be at my son's birth,” Richmond said. “I've seen birthdays, I've seen anniversaries. I wouldn't have those events, I wouldn't have those memories if people hadn't donated blood. The ‘pay it forward’ is exponential."

As a special thanks, all who donate with Vitalant June 1-28 will receive a $10 gift card through Vitalant Donor Rewards and be entered to win $10,000 in the Gear Up Giveaway.*

Donations from donors of all blood types help patients. Type O and platelet donors are especially needed. Type O is the most transfused. Platelets must be used within a week of donation. They most often help cancer patients.

Most donors are eligible to give if they feel well, weight at least 110 pounds and are at least 16 years old. View eligibility requirements and make an appointment to give at vitalant.org, download and use the Vitalant app or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825).
